One killed in crash outside Fredericksburg

June 29th, 2011

One person was killed Tuesday evening after running off a rural county road 12 miles west of Fredericksburg, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

The name of the driver and single occupant in the 2000 Isuzu Rodeo was not released as authorities attempted to identify the person, who was burned beyond recognition.

DPS troopers said the vehicle was westbound on FM 2093 when it entered a left-hand curve and ran out of control shortly after 7:30 p.m.

The driver then ran off the highway and into a ditch on the north side of the road before striking a tree.

The car then burst into flames, authorities said. DPS troopers said the body was burned beyond recognition.

Officials Wednesday continued their attempts to determine the person’s identity and contact next of kin.

18-wheel rig overturns on interstate

June 29th, 2011

Interstate 37 traffic was shut down for nearly six hours after a tractor-trailer rig overturned at the Interstate 10 West ramps southeast of downtown early Wednesday.

Police closed down both north and southbound ramps onto I-10 shortly after the mishap, which occurred at 12:36 a.m. One lane of traffic in either direction was opened shortly after 6:30 a.m., traffic investigators said. But traffic was jammed as commuters attempted to line up single file to make it past the wreckage.

Officers said the big rig’s driver was northbound on I-37 attempting to merge onto the I-10 West ramp when he apparently lost control, causing the 18-wheeler to overturn and spilling its load of auto parts and scrap metal on the busy stretch of roadway.

It took clean-up crews about six hours to clear enough of the debris and right the rig to allow a partial reopening of I-37 ahead of the morning commute. Clean-up efforts were further complicated when a tow truck attempting to help move the rig off the road had its tow cable snap, injuring the driver. Police said his injuries were not serious.

Police suspect the big rig’s driver may have been traveling too fast as he attempted to merge onto I-10 West. Police said the driver was not injured.

Woman accused of being getaway driver in heist

June 28th, 2011

A woman suspected of driving the getaway car in an attempted far North Side bank robbery has been arrested.

Amber Garcia, 21, is accused of helping her friend Alexis Ramos, 21, try to rob an IBC branch at U.S. 281 and Evans Road on June 17.

Police said Ramos pulled a BB gun and stun gun on bank employees and demanded money but was foiled when an employee disarmed her.

The would be robber escaped in a car, but Ramos was arrested Saturday. Garcia sent a text message to a police officer she knew, saying, “I was the one driving … don’t think of me as a criminal she just threw everything in my head,” police said.

The officer urged her to turn herself in, and Garcia called the SAPD robbery unit Monday to say she “knew everything” and felt too guilty to eat or sleep, but did not call again, police said.

She was arrested Thursday and released on $30,000 bail. Both women are charged with aggravated robbery.

Four killed in separate accidents overnight

June 24th, 2011

Four people were killed, including two pedestrians, in four separate traffic accidents during a five-hour period overnight and early Wednesday, police said.

The rains that hit the area after midnight appeared to have played a role in three of the fatalities, officers said.

Police said Liza Marie Hunt, 30, was killed in a wreck in the 8100 block of Fredericksburg Road near the Datapoint Drive intersection at about 1:30 a.m.

Officers said the woman’s silver Toyota was traveling about 70 mph south without her headlights on when she apparently lost control and the car slammed into a telephone pole. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Only about half an hour earlier, police had responded to another one-car crash in the 6300 block of Spring Time Drive. Officers said Lizsandra Rodriguez, 33, was driving east when she lost control of her car, which crossed two lanes of traffic, a sidewalk and the front yard of a house before it struck a tree.

Officers said Rodriguez was not wearing a seat belt and was critically injured when she struck the steering wheel, gear shift and dashboard of her 2005 Mercury. She was pronounced dead shortly after 1 a.m. at University Hospital.

The other two fatalities involved men attempting to cross busy highways after dark. One was struck by two cars as he attempted to run across the 6700 block of SW Loop 410 near Daytona Street at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Julian Torrez, 37, was hit by a northbound 2004 Cadillac, then run over by a 2007 Mercedes-Benz, police reported.

Officers said another man crossing U.S. 281 earlier Tuesday night was struck by a southbound Kia sedan whose driver swerved but could not avoid hitting him. Raymond Cisneros, 41, was pronounced dead at 10:13, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

EMS paramedics “tried treating him, but there was nothing they could do,” said police Sgt. Don Mize. “You don’t ever want to cross six lanes of traffic, especially at night.”
